Hopefully you will get some time off this holiday season. What better way to spend it than to sit down with some homemade popcorn and watch a fun foodie movie!
I asked the Food Photography Club FB group members what were their favorite foodie movies, and here is what they said. If I’ve left out some of your favorites, please post them in the comments below.
My next post will be about the most popular foodie documentaries.
These are in no particular order:
Chef 2014
Starring Jon Favreau playing a head chef who totally goes off on a customer, has a fabulous twitter war with a critic, and starts a food truck. Chef on IMDB
Julie and Julia 2009
Right when this whole blogging thing started to take off, this movie is a cute story of a woman who decided to take on the challenge of cooking every recipe in Julia Child’s first cookbook, “Mastering The Art Of French Cooking”, and blogging about it. Julie and Julia on DMDB
Ratatouille 2007
A sweet movie by Pixar about a rat who is an amazing French “chef”. He has a special relationship with a cook in a fancy, famous restaurant in Paris and of course, all kinds of shenanigans ensue. Ratatouille on IMDB
Chocolat 2000
A beautifully shot movie starring Juliette Binoche, Judy Dench, and Johnny Depp about a woman who opens a little chocolate shop in a tiny village in France that becomes quite the scandal. Chocolat on IMDB
Tampopo 1985
A Japanese comedy, (with subtitles) about two truck drivers who stop by a noodle shot and decide to teach them how to make noodles, the right way. They’ve actually restored it for high resolution viewing. Tampopo on IMDB
The Big Night 1996
A funny story about two brothers who make wonderful Italian food, but have no business. They decided to put all they could into one special night to save the restaurant. The Big Night On IMDB
The Hundred-Foot Journey 2014
With Helen Mirren, a snobby, French Michelin Star winning restaurateur who is horrified when a small Indian family restaurant opens directly across the street. Cultures and traditions collide in such a beautiful and hilarious way. The Hundred-Foot Journey on IMDB
No Reservations 2007
A love story about a woman, (Catherine Zeta-Jones) suddenly becoming a mom to her young niece while being the head chef of a prestigious Manhattan restaurant who isn’t all that acceptable of change, at first. No Reservations on IMDB
Babette’s Feast 1987
A period piece taking place in the 19th century, with Babette being a French refugee in a Danish village who treats her new friends with an incredible French meal experience they will never forget.
The Lunchbox 2013
Taking place in Mumbai, a house wife in a disappointing marriage prepares lunchboxes for a living. One day, one of her lunchboxes gets delivered to the wrong man, (which never happens), who loves the food and eats it all. There was a note in his lunchbox that he responds to, and they start a relationship by writing each other each day. The Lunchbox on IMDB
Bottle Shock 2008
A great time period film, based on a true story about how California Chardonnay created a huge controversy at the 1976 blind wine taste testing in Paris. Hey, wine is food too! Bottle Shock on IMDB
Like Water For Chocolate 1992
When a young woman is denied her love, she takes out her frustrations by cooking some amazing concoctions, of course involving some chocolate. Like Water For Chocolate on IMDB
Obviously there are many more to add to this list. Please put your favorites in the comments and sign up below to make sure you don’t miss another post.
Meggan
I just finished reading Julie and Julia after having watched the movie recently. It’s a great read and the movie was also great. Big fan of the Hundred Foot Journey – I must watch that again! Although it’s not strictly about food, Under The Tuscan Sun is one of my favourite movies and I love the story of how Frances builds a family around her, a group of friends who come together to enjoy the Italian meals as she learns to cook the local cuisine. Must read/watch.

Hi Meggan, I remember Under The Tuscan Sun. Forgot all about it. That’s a good one to add to the list.
Kalei
I know it’s an older movie (1999) but Simply Irresistible has to be on this list too! It’s one of my favorites next to some of these.
Christina Peters
Hi Kalei! Thanks for the suggestion!
Cathy
This is a great list! I’ve enjoyed a few of these, and there are several more I must see. I also like the 2015 movie Burnt. There’s some great plating going on in it!
Christina Peters
Hi Cathy, I’ve not heard of that one, thanks for sharing it.
Lindy Sez Baker
I would have to include Jiro Dreams of Sushi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-aGPniFvS0 as one of my favs.
Christina Peters
Hi Lindy – yes indeed – this one is going on the documentary foodie movie list for sure.
